Danny Philpot
Danny Philpot has overcome many of the barriers he has experienced in his life since an accident ended his promising racing career. He presents inspiring and motivational talks on the way he uses sport to give him strength and a passion for life. To Danny Philpot the only barriers he knew were the ones that his racing mounts started from at the racetrack. At age 19, as an upcoming professional jockey, he learned of the barriers associated with disability.
After a serious fall and sustain injuries, Danny's love of sport and determination were far from over. Using swimming to rehabilitate, he put all his energy into hard training and competed in the Seoul par-Olympics and two World Games, breaking the Australian record in his category.
After being disappointed at his performance in one of the competitions, he temporarily lost sight of his passion for sport and zest for life. Not willing however to sit around for the rest of his life his love of sport forced him to re-evaluate his life and determine what he could both physically and mentally still achieve in the sports world.
Danny again found direction in his life and established his own business; ‘Brisbane Race Day Tours’. Due to his continuing love of horses and familiarity with the racing world, he devised the unique idea of taking people on race day tours at the Doomben and Eagle Farm racetracks. His now successful business finds Danny escorting weekly race day tours and introducing patrons to the track jockeys, stewards, stables and races.
Since establishing his business, Danny has increased his confidence significantly and the sense of responsibility he had as a jockey has now returned to him. He believes that through sport everything is achievable. His philosophy is that determination, faith and passion are what makes someone successful, and there is no need to climb Mount Everestt in the first week.
Danny is driven by listening to up-beat and positive people and after attending Toastmasters realised that he could also teach his many important lessons through his passion and love of sport. Whether at the starting barrier or facing a barrier due to his disability, He has learned to Take advantage of everything that is offered, and believes there is something positive in every situation.
